Calico Town has
a name referring to the history of Rutherglen, which really
began as a
Gold Rush town where "buildings" were of calico and canvas!! We
have the remains of gold mines, and the last poppet head in North East
Victoria stands on our property adjacent to our Cellar Door, overlooking
the Vineyard and Olive Grove. Initially we planted Shiraz, the
rich and robust wine variety for which Rutherglen is famous. This has
been followed with further plantings of
other varieties of grapes to expand the range of wines we offer.
Calico Town's debut Vintage
from the 2002 harvest has "...balance, intensity o
f flavour
and an
impressive structure...." We've had 2 more vintages released since then which shape up as being of the
same calibre !! WOW !!!
Rutherglen Shiraz 2002 received the People's Choice Award at
Federation Square in 2004.
